Situated at the cross roads of Tower Hill, East Cliff, Barbican Hill and Castle Street, Banjo Cottage is right in the heart of East Looe.
Heading up East Cliff will take you along the South West Coastal Path toward Plaidy and Millendreath, both of which have lovely sandy beaches.
Heading up Barbican Hill (which is steep and very narrow) will take you to the Barbican area of Looe with amazing views over the valley.
Heading down Tower Hill takes you to the Old Guildhall museum & Goal, then turn left and you are 100 meters from the beach.
Heading down Castle Street 20 meters is the famous Daisy's Cafe then down to Fore Street which has many different types of fish and chip shops, Cornish Pasty shops, traditional Cornish fudge shops, two Co-Ops many pubs and even its own gin distillery.
When driving to Banjo Cottage, unless you are very confident about driving down very narrow roads, it is best to avoid Barbican Hill and arrive via Fore Street.
The old bathroom in the main bedroom was old and a leak had started that allowed water to escape from the shower into the second bedroom. As such we took the decision to have the whole bathroom ripped out and replaced.
This turned out to be fortuitous as the water damage had spread around most of the bathroom.
The whole bathroom was stripped back to the bare concrete walls and floor, left to dry out for two weeks, then a complete new bathroom fitted in 2023.
The bathroom is a small space but we hope you like it with the powerful shower.
Both bathrooms are fitted with always on extractor fans to ensure good ventilation.
Banjo Cottage is named after the famous pier, on the East Looe side of the entrance to the river estuary, which can be seen from the balcony. It is an ex warehouse / workshop from the 18th century as such it is Grade II listed with traditional stone walls.
Inside has been converted to a modern 2 bedroom holiday let. It has two bedrooms both with en-suite bathrooms. Ideal for family holidays.
Following feedback from guests, a new kitchen was fitted at the beginning of 2022 that has plenty of storage and work surface, brand new oven and hob as well as toaster, kettle, coffee machine and microwave.
One of the other new features installed in 2022 is the butler sink on the ground floor. This is ideal for guests coming back from a day a the beach or a long dog walk, to wash sandy or muddy shoes or buckets and spades.
A unique feature of Banjo Cottage is that it has three doors, one on each floor and each door opens on to a different road as Banjo is built into the side of the cliff (as are many houses in Looe) and some of the walls inside the cottage are actually part of the cliff face.
Gardens in the centre of Looe are a rarity due to the age of the village and how steep the valley is that Looe is built in.
Banjo Cottage does not have a garden but it does have a south facing balcony that has a four seater table and chairs as well as a two seater bench. The balcony is surrounded on all sides by a metal fence, though children and dogs should be supervised at all times when on the balcony.
Being South facing, the balcony benefits from direct sunshine almost all day, it is also sheltered from sea breezes making it perfect for a morning coffee, a family lunch or a cheeky wine.
From the balcony you enjoy views over much of Looe, Banjo pier and out to sea. Binoculars are provided in the cottage so you can have a good look over the rooftops of East Looe and and to the houses in West Looe.
Looe is by the seaside as such there are seagulls.
Seagulls are large birds that are very brave so it is wise to ensure that you do not leave food unattended on the balcony if you are having a picnic as it will not be there when you go back.
Seagulls are noisy and this is something that is a charming feature of life on the coast.
Gulls lay their eggs at the beginning of May - there are usually several nests that can be seen from the balcony which makes for more entertainment than any TV program. However do not interfere with the chicks and do not feed the gulls at all.
